in most cases someone knowing your IP address is harmless. Only if your internet router is insecure and that is vanishingly rare or you've deliberately done something to make your router potentially insecure like opening firewall rules to host a webservice, website or game server. It's highly unlikely for someone like this to just come by and to break into your house but there are certainly people out there who are capable of doing so. In this is instance "looking around" someones IP address is like looking around their city via google maps and you can't even knock on any of the doors and you don't know where they live or what they look like. Most people have dynamic IP addresses, and you'll have a different IP address the next time your router connects to internet.Įven with a fixed IP address, routers are secure, although I'd be a bit more concerned if someone really wanted to break in.Īnyone connecting via mobile internet is even more anonymous as mobile carriers use Network Address Translation (NAT) so that 10s of thousands of subscribers can share a pool of IP addresses. so anyone "taking a look around" is only going to see a very generic and very secure front door (your internet router/firewall). You would have to have taken specific action to make your home router insecure, particularly to some random who's just found out your IP address.
